This is a tutorial on how to set up an account with Smugmug and post homework for Photoshop online classes. There are many ways to publish homework, including using blogs or using other photo sharing web sites like Flickr. Many of these options are discussed in How the Classes Work on myjanee.com. You can use any method of getting your homework on the Web, including posting to your own Web pages. However, most students who start do not have their own websites, so this tutorial is aimed at you. Smugmug prices are reasonable, and at this time are under $40 per year for an unlimited number of pictures. To see if you like it, Smugmug offers the first 14 days free. Smugmug has no advertising, and you can keep using your account for multiple classes. It is easy to understand, and easy to use. Read through this tutorial, and if you decide that you want to use Smugmug, this tutorial will show you how.
But a word of caution: many students now are using a two phased approach. Students new to the web are obtaining a Blogger account from Google. They use the blog that until they are ready to publish their own web pages using their ISP (Internet Support Provider). Blogger from Google is free, unlike Smugmug. And the interface is just as easy. See Janee's Posting Class Assignments tutorial for details on signing up to different services or go directly to Blogger and follow their easy instructions.
However, if you not only want to post online homework images, but you also want to share tons of photos with all your relatives and friends, then using Smugmug and all it's photo galleries may be just the thing for you. To signup for a Smugmug account, go to smugmug.com.
| * You will see this page (or one very similar to this). | ![]() |
| * Click on the link for the Free Trial. You will have to set up a new account using an email address, a username and a password, but it is not hard to do. | |
| * Click on the link for new gallery, and you will be asked to give your Gallery a name. This is the Gallery where you will post the homework for your class. | ![]() |
| * If you notice, I named my Gallery "Janee's Online Courses" since I am covering all the classes with Janee. I recommend that you give your Gallery the name of the class you are taking. For example, if you were taking Launchpad A, I would give the Gallery that name, Launchpad A. That way, you can create new Galleries for each class you take. You can designate any Category you choose. I picked Photography as being close to what I am showing. Don't worry about designating a Theme, and leave the access marked for Public so your instructors and fellow students can see your work. | ![]() |
| * Click the Create button when you have finished titling your Gallery. | |
| * This completes the initial set up of the account at Smugmug. The next thing you want to do is upload your homework after you have created it. We will discuss this in the next section, Image Upload. | Next Section: Image Upload |
